Borax Crystal Shamrocks

Borax Crystals Shamrocks are the perfect St. Patrick's Day fun to have with the kids! Easy step-by-step directions on how to grow borax crystals in the shape of a shamrock. This easy St. Patrick's Day activity for kids is one that they will love!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups water
  • ¼ cup Borax detergent booster
  • 2 Green pipe cleaners 1 for each crystal
  • Scissors
  • 2 Glass Jars
  • Thread or thin string
  • 2 Popsicle sticks

Instructions

  • Twist 2 green pipe cleaners into a shamrock shape, giving you 2 shamrock shaped pipe cleaners.
  • Attach a string to the pipe cleaner by tying it. Attach the pipe cleaner to the popsicle stick.
  • Pour 1/2 the borax powder in to each glass jar.
  • Next warm up the water up in the microwave so it is hot. You don’t need it to be boiling, but hotter than average warm tap water. The hotter the water the better they will grow, but you do not want it boiling.
  • Slowly pour 1 cup of water into each jar. Pour slowly to allow the jar temperature to adjust so it does not crack. Stir the mixture until all of the borax powder is dissolved.
  • Carefully drop one pipe cleaner into each jar with borax solution so it hangs in the middle of the jar without touching the edges or bottom. Use the popsicle stick to adjust the length of the string by wrapping the string around it if needed. Lay the popsicle stick flat across the top of the jar so it holds the pipe cleaner in place in the jar.
