Valentine’s Day is right around the corner so in our house we made this fun valentine slime. We took our simple butter slime recipe and turned it into a fun Valentine’s Day activity.

Slime is something all of my kids love making and playing with and I am always looking for fun ways to make even more slime for them to enjoy. What is butter slime?
While butter slime does not actually have real butter in it. Butter slime gets its name because it is a smooth textured slime that has a buttery-like texture. Unlike traditional slime it doesn’t ooze like other slimes, instead it bends, molds and is a lot more fluffy then other types of slime. The key ingredients to making butter slime over basic slime is using clay and shaving cream. Butter slime has a thick texture that is also smooth with what is called a buttery texture giving it the name butter slime.
What is the best Shaving cream to use for Butter slime?
The cheap foaming shaving cream is the best shaving cream to use when making a butter slime recipe. I do not suggest using gel shaving cream, while it fluffs up when you are using it to shave, you need to use your hands to make it fluffy before putting it into the slime. You also want to be careful not to add to much shaving cream as it will make the slime start to get liquid instead of being a slime consistency. Be sure to follow the measurements we have shared in this slime recipe.
What is the best glue for slime?
The best glue to use when making slime is Elmer’s school glue. For this slime recipe, we are using white school glue, but other recipes that we have to use clear glue and we always suggest using Elmer’s glue as we find it is the best glue for slime making.
What is the best contact solution to use as a Slime activator when making slime?
When making slime it is important that the ingredients in your saline solution has the ingredients needed to react with the glue so the slime forms. Whatever brand of contact lens solution you use must have boric acid and sodium borate in the ingredient list.

How do you color Butter slime?
I find the best way to color butter slime is using air dry clay (I like using the model magic clay brand) in the color I want the slime to be. You can use liquid food coloring and only need a few drops if you want to use white model magic and then color it with food coloring.
How to store Butter Slime
Butter slime needs to be stored in an airtight container. When stored properly it will last for about a week. You can also store it in a zip close plastic bag and squeeze the air out of it.
How do you know if slime is overactivated?
When you are making slime you need to use slime activators, for our recipe we use saline solution (other recipes for slime call for using borax or liquid starch but we prefer to use saline solution for our slime recipes). If you add too much saline solution then your slime will got from being slime like to very rubbery and break apart easily.

How do you keep slime from sticking to your hand when making it?
Fluffy slime is sticky when it is being made so you can use gloves while you are making it or you can rub your hands with baby oil or lotion before making the slime to keep it from sticking to your hands.
How do you fix a stiff Butter slime?
If your slime is dry and stiff that does not mean that it is ruined. Add the slime to a small bowl and then add a little bit of water to the bowl and squish the slime with the water to add the water to the ball of slime and incorporate the water into the slime to bring it back to being stretchy and fun.

In a mixing bowl add the white glue and the water and mix well.
Add the shaving cream into the glue mixture and mix well until combined.
Next, add in the baking soda and mix well.
Add in the saline solution one tablespoon at a time and mix the slime mixture until the slime starts to form and pulls away from the sides of the bowl. You may not need to use all of the saline solution, so be careful when you are adding it. If you add to much it will make your slime hard.
Once the slime is formed fully, spread out the slime in the bowl and add in the model magic and mix it into the slime with your hands.
Once the model magic is fully mixed in add the confetti and use your hands to mix it thru out the slime.

Slime Saftey and Precautions
Making slime is a fun science experiment to do with the kids but there are something to keep in mind when you are making it.
Adult supervision. Slime should be made with adult supervision as you are using chemicals when you are making the slime.
Do not put slime in your mouth. This slime is not edible and if ingested can make you sick. If slime or any of the chemical ingredients are ingested get medically attention immediately.
Wash your hands. Before and after playing with slime you should wash your hands. It is also needed to wash your hands after making slime.
Skin irritation. If you notice skin irritation from playing with the slime stop playing with the slime immediately and wash your hands.
