What is butter slime?
While butter slime does not actually have real butter in it, butter slime gets its name because it is a smooth textured slime that has a buttery-like texture. Unlike traditional slime it doesn’t ooze like other slimes, instead, it bends, molds and is a lot more fluffy than other types of slime. The key ingredients to making butter slime over basic slime is using clay and shaving cream. Butter slime has a thick texture that is also smooth with what is called a buttery texture giving it the name butter slime.
Tips for Making Easter Butter Slime
- Mix thoroughly. Make sure to mix all the ingredients thoroughly, especially when adding the liquid starch. This will help ensure that the slime forms properly and has a smooth texture.
- Knead the slime. After the slime has formed, knead it with your hands to help it become smooth and stretchy. This is an important step as it will help remove any lumps or air bubbles and make the slime easier to play with.
- Use white school glue. Butter slime is typically made with white school glue as it gives the slime a smooth buttery texture. Clear glue can also be used, but it may result in a different texture. We prefer to use Elmer’s school glue as we find it works best.
- Don’t skimp on the shaving cream. Shaving cream is an essential ingredient in butter slime as it gives the slime its fluffy and light texture. Make sure to use enough shaving cream to achieve the desired consistency.

How do you know if the slime is overactivated?
When you are making slime you need to use slime activators, for our recipe we use saline solution (other recipes for slime call for using borax or liquid starch but we prefer to use saline solution for our slime recipes). If you add too much saline solution then your slime will go from being slime like to very rubbery and break apart easily.
How do you keep the slime from sticking to your hand when making it?
Fluffy slime is sticky when it is being made so you can use gloves while you are making it or you can rub your hands with baby oil or lotion before making the slime to keep it from sticking to your hands.
How do you fix a stiff Butter slime?
If your slime is dry and stiff that does not mean it is ruined. Add the slime to a small bowl and then add a little bit of water to the bowl and squish the slime with the water to add the water to the ball of slime and incorporate the water into the slime to bring it back to being stretchy and fun.

How to store Butter Slime
Butter slime needs to be stored in an airtight container. When stored properly it will last for about a week. You can also store it in a zip-close plastic bag and squeeze the air out of it.
What is the best glue for Butter slime?
Elmer’s white glue is considered the top choice for making slime. In this particular slime recipe, we’re using white school glue, but for other recipes that require clear glue, we recommend using Elmer’s glue as it has consistently yielded the best results for slime making.
What is the best contact solution to use as a Slime activator when making slime?
When making slime it is important that the ingredients in your saline solution has the ingredients needed to react with the glue so the slime forms. Whatever brand of contact lens solution you use must have boric acid and sodium borate in the ingredient list.
What is the best Shaving cream to use for Butter slime?
Cheap foaming shaving cream is the best shaving cream to use. I do not suggest using gel shaving cream, while it fluffs up when you are using it to shave, you need to use your hands to make it fluffy before putting it into the slime. You also want to be careful not to add too much shaving cream as it will make the slime start to get liquid instead of being a slime consistency. Be sure to follow the measurements we have shared in this slime recipe.

How do you color Butter slime?
I find the best way to color butter slime is by using air dry clay (I like using the model magic clay brand) in the color I want the slime to be. You can use liquid food coloring and only need a few drops if you want to use white model magic and then color it with food coloring.
